Month 2 Tip

Try selecting the charm squares for your star points first and set them aside. These should be the charm squares that contrast the most with the nine charm squares you select for the block. Once your blocks are sewn together, measure them to see if they are 12-1/2” x 12-1/2”. Squaring up your blocks as you go along will make assembly of your quilt top much easier in the end!

If you find your blocks are a little larger, square them up to 12-1/2”. If you find your block measures a little less than 12-1/2”, you may want to try taking a “scant” smaller seam when constructing your blocks. I found years ago that a ¼” foot for a machine is invaluable when making quilt blocks. But, if you don’t have one, or you find that your blocks are consistently smaller or larger than they should be, try this. . . Draw a thin line exactly ¼” from the straight edge of a scrap piece of fabric. Then, place the fabric under your presser foot, draw the sewing machine needle down through the drawn line and put the presser foot down. Then, mark where the edge of the fabric is at on the throat place by using a piece of masking tape, painter’s tape or moleskin and use this as your ¼” seam allowance guide.

Guess I had better get the ruler out - hadn't even thought about checking size as I go. Good idea Vicki.
